Training for a marathon can be a daunting task, but there are a few essential items that'll make it much more enjoyable. Whether you want to set a new PR or just finish the race, you'll want to make sure you have the right gear. Here are the top five items you’ll need:
This is so important because your shoes can make or break your training. There's a lot of science that goes into high-quality running footwear, proving that a well-fit pair can help you run better and keep you injury free. If you're unsure which shoes are right for you, just visit your local running shop. My personal favorites are Altra running shoes.
If you live in a colder climate, then you're probably training in snow, rain, or freezing temperatures. You’ll want to keep your hands, feet, and head as warm as possible, so make sure you have a good pair of gloves, socks, and a hat. You’ll also want to keep your core warm with a waterproof jacket. My favorite gloves, socks, and jackets are by GORE Wear. The material is completely waterproof, but still allows your perspiration to pass through - so you stay dry and comfortable during your long runs.
A GPS watch will help you track your mileage, total duration, and pace per mile so you can keep track of your weekly stats. This will help you see the work you're putting in and your improvement over time. I use and love the Sunto Ambit.
These aren’t required for running, but they’ll definitely make it more fun! Find a pair of wireless Bluetooth® headphones, then create a playlist of songs that will keep you pumped up. Jaybird Runs are my go-to – they are completely wireless, water and sweat resistant, and really comfortable to wear.
If you're new to running and don't know what you're doing, or you simply just want to improve, then you might benefit from a coach who can help you break through a plateau or give you a boost of confidence.
Alright, now you’re ready to start training!
