Establishing a workout routine at the start of fall can be daunting. With busy schedules, fall festivities, and the holidays just around the corner, there’s little or no time to think about working out, let alone actually working out. But fall is the perfect time to implement better habits and make some changes. That’s why I’ve created 6 simple and achievable ways for you to stay in shape through autumn. And no, eating a bag of candy corn isn’t on there.
1. Get in on the sports action.
Fall means sports are back in full swing. Are your kids playing? If so, take advantage of it and practice with them at home, or stick around at practice and do a few laps around the track. And if you’re really a sports die-hard, look to join a local sports team for some good exercise and friendly competition.
2. Enjoy the outdoors.
Who doesn’t love crisp fall air? Enjoy the beautiful weather and head outside for a walk, trail run, hike with the family, or bike ride. This time of year comes and goes fast, so enjoy it while it lasts!
3. Join your kids.
School’s in! Don’t just send your kids out the door each morning and stay inside for the rest of the day. Instead, walk with them to the bus in the morning and meet them there in the afternoon. Or if they ride their bikes, ride to and from school with them. That extra activity each day can make a big difference.
4. Stay active during commercial break.
I get it. Fall is the start of hibernation time, which usually means bundling up under cozy covers, sipping a cup of hot cocoa, and watching your favorite TV series. But rather than binging for 6 hours straight and never moving, add a workout in during commercial breaks or after an episode. I like to do sit-ups in between commercials until my show comes back on, but you can do jumping jacks, push-ups, squats, anything you want!
5. Rake leaves.
Household duties are a great way to burn extra calories. We all know the leaves will fall and someone’s got to clean them up. (Ahem...I’m talking to you) So get outside and rake your leaves! And if you don’t have any, help a neighbor with theirs.
6. Eat fresh or local food.
Take advantage of the last couple months of farmers’ markets and savor those yummy fresh fruits and veggies that are in season. Especially if you’re going to be snowed in this winter, like us iFit folks in Utah. If there’s not a farmers’ market close to you, remember to shop fresh food and produce at your local grocery store.
Happy fall, friends!
