iFIT Member Highlight: Stuart Selden

Meet iFIT member Stuart Selden!

Stuart was ready to make a lasting change in his life when he first joined iFIT in 2020. Since then, he's embarked on an incredible journey, including a massive solo backpacking trip! Stuart shared his experience of total transformation, along with the part iFIT played in helping him achieve his goals.

iFit Member Highlight: Stuart Selden

Stuart’s Story

I purchased a ProForm 9000 treadmill last year when I knew I would be working from home and needed to give myself more options to get fit. Walking from my bedroom to the computer room to the kitchen wasn't going to cut it. I was unhappy with my weight and struggled to stick with my health goals. This was all about to change! Since my treadmill became the newest member of the family, I’ve made considerable progress. I quit diet soda for the first time in 20 years and now look forward to every training session. I even planned and completed a 45-mile, solo backpacking trip, where I climbed from 5,000 to over 12,000 feet. I would NEVER have been able to do that in my previous condition.

My mind and body are now fully focused, and I’m capable of movement to reach heights I’d only dreamt of. I still have further to go on my journey. I'm not at the finish line, but I'm confident I can get there because I have the tools I need to be successful. It's all thanks to the conditioning I get from iFIT, the motivational trainers that push me, and the one-of-a-kind virtual immersion that keeps me coming back for more!

Here's to many more years with my iFIT family and everyone working behind the scenes to make this a health-improving experience!

Who is your favorite iFIT Trainer?

John Peel!

Did you use any specific iFIT workout series to train for your backpacking trip?

I followed a lot of programs over the months, but the one that stood out to me was John Peel’s Alps Beginner Series. Immersing myself in the alpine scenery and listening to John Peel's positive instructions made it easy to stay motivated and keep my mind on the goal: climbing big mountains. I also participate in iFIT's monthly Challenges, which are always fun and keep me connected with the large iFIT community.

What's your favorite part about iFIT?

I can't pick just a single favorite thing. It is truly the entire package that makes iFIT so crucial to my health and physical fitness. The machine is the opening act; I know I'm going to burn calories if I use it. The software and all of these amazing programs open up an entirely new world to explore virtually. Beach? Mountains? City? What wonders of the world do I have the pleasure of viewing while I train during my next workout?

Then, there are the trainers. What a fantastic group of people that iFIT has assembled to help me along this journey. They are always so positive, friendly, motivating, and truly welcome you into the iFIT family. This, of course, wouldn't be possible without the dedicated effort of everyone on the iFIT team working both in front of the camera and behind the scenes. It's the total package!

To sum it up: I love how iFIT takes the guesswork out of the fitness equation. When I turn my treadmill on, I know I'm going to have a fun workout, improve my health, and be that much closer to reaching my next fitness goal.

How long have you been an iFIT member?

I've been an iFIT member since April 2020. That means we are coming up on our first anniversary together! Hmm...what gift should I get my treadmill?

People Need People: The Positive Effects of Socializing

As human beings, we are social creatures by nature. Instinctively, we don’t like feeling alone, and our bodies and brains actually function better when we are surrounded by others. We are basically wired to be social. If you were to google “why humans need humans” or anything along those lines, you’ll find a plethora of articles explaining why social connections and friendships are vital to our health and well-being. Outside of our family units, when we have friends we can lean on, laugh with, cry with, and talk to, we are nourishing ourselves physically, mentally, and emotionally. We need that connectivity not only to survive, like this article suggests, but to thrive. Whether you’re someone who prefers to have just a few really close pals, or you’re a social butterfly with a lot of friends, at the end of the day, we need those relationships. Here are the top three reasons we need friendships in our lives! Friendships improve our health Research has shown that having strong social connections is vital to our health. For starters, it can reduce stress levels, ward off depression and suicide, lower the risk of dementia, heart disease, and cancer, as well as boost our immune system...and that’s just the tip of the iceberg. It’s also easier to exercise and live a healthier lifestyle when you have the support of friends and family. Friends extend our life expectancy Aside from improving our overall health, maintaining friendships can also add years to our lives—just like regular exercise, healthy eating habits, and not smoking. Multiple studies have found that people who have positive relationships with their family, friends, and community are happier and tend to live longer. Some studies have even gone as far to conclude that social belongingness is just as important as physical survival needs, such as food and shelter. Friends make life more fun This might not be a mind-blowing revelation, but friends bring an abundant amount of happiness to our lives. While I’m sure you can find enjoyment doing certain things solo, I’d argue that most things are more fun when you do it with someone else. There’s an unexplainable joy that comes from sharing experiences with people we care about. Studies have shown, including this one conducted back in 2011, that having meaningful social relationships affects our neurobiological endogenous opioid system (think endorphins), triggering the part of the brain that makes us feel good. Simply put, connecting and interacting with our friends gives us happy feelings. Ever caught up with an old friend, then felt really good afterwards? Those are your endorphins kicking in, telling you that what you just did is healthy for your emotional and physical health! So, no matter what stage of life you’re in, make it a priority to get out and do things with your friends. Whether it’s a quick phone call or grabbing lunch, keep your friends close and remember to have fun!
