When it comes to marathons, there are all sorts of truths and lies. So how do you know the facts from the fiction? Well, we’re going to bust the top five marathon myths below
This is a little fact and fiction, because it depends! Your stride, type of shoes, and the terrain can all play a role in whether or not you’ll be bruisin’ and losin’ your toenails. (Side note: Our average toenail count among our iFit trainers is 9.2 toenails.)
Fiction! Marathons are for people of all ages. Of course, you should always ask a doctor for clearance before starting any type of strenuous activity, but if all systems go, don’t let age stop you from your 26.2 dream.
Fiction! If you let it, then it will. But you are still the master of your schedule and you can train your body in a way that fits your lifestyle. Just plan on large chunks of time for long runs and enough time to recover.
Fiction! This is a very rare and uncommon occurrence. Just remember, your body is still your body. You’ll still know when you need to stop at the porta potty, and you should have enough warning to get there.
Fiction! Unfortunately, this is a big myth that’s all too easy to believe. Our bodies require specific types of food and a certain amount of calories to function at such a high-activity level, which means a tub of ice cream won’t give you the energy and fuel you need.
If there’s anything holding you back from running, don’t be afraid to look into it. If you’re afraid you can’t finish because you’ve never ran long distance before, read stories of people who have. If you’re afraid that you’ll lose your toenails and have ugly summer feet forever, find a solution like new shoes or ways to bandage your toes to prevent bruising. Our bodies are incredible things! Don’t limit yourself because of misconceptions from yourself or other people.
Start running, keep running, love running!
